Gonubie Beach is situated 25 kilometers north of East London and is connected to the city by the n2. Gonubie Beach received blue flag status, a prestigious international award only given to beaches that meet stringent standards in environment protection, fascilities provided in safety equipment and personal on hand. The main parking lot is connected to the beach by a long scenic wooden boardwalk passing man made tidal pools and lush native vegetation.
Nahoon Beach Bluff
Nahoon Beach, named after a local Xhosa cheef, is East London's most popular beach with kilometers of uncrowded, unpolluted sand. The beach is home to the Surf Live Saving Club and hosts alot of national surfing competitions, because of its spectacular surfing waves. The beach offers something for just about every one, for it is also a popular place among fishermen and people that are just interested in bathing.
Orient Beach can be found at the southern end of the esplanade in the Quigney suburb of East London. It is close to hotels and shops on the Esplanade, which makes it a favourite among tourists. Been protected by the break waters of the habbour and patrolled by life guards, it is a safe environment to bathe calmly. Two large circular swimming pools with slides surrounded by green lawns provide adequate space for the thousands. There is a refreshment kiosk (in season) and many restaurants close by to satisfy the hunger after a refreshing swim and changing fascilities are also provided.
The Frends of East London Aquarium
Officially opened on the second of December 1931, the Frends of East London Aquarium is the oldest public aquarium in southern Africa. The aquarium play an important role in helping marine animals in distress that are the victims of pollution and other disasters. Hundreds of animals are been rehabilitated and returned to the ocean each year. The aquarium also plays its part by educating the locals in understanding and respecting the eco system of the ocean. The aquarium offers large and beautifully lighted fish tanks displaying the local fish population.
Wale watching Deck
The Southern Right wales migrates southwards down the coast of South Africa to their arctic feeding grounds and come close inshore at East London and with this in mind the aquarium build a eleven metre high platform that sits right above the surf. This provides visitors with an excellent opportunity to view this magnificent animals as they go about in the bay.
