History
Hermanus is situated on the Atlantic Ocean, 120 kilometers East of Cape Town. It is a very popular holiday resort and during the main season (December and January) the population of the town is doubled by an influx of holiday makers and it is practically imposible to find a room free. Although Hermanus is a cosmopolitan town, it has retained some of its historical fishermen’s village heritage. The town owes its popularity to a combination of factors which will unfold as we go along, but in particular to its mild coastal climate – and the status of being the best land-based wale watching spot in the world.
Hermanus Tourism
Whale Watching Hermanus Western Cape
Although whales can easily be spotted during August/October peak season from the 10 kilometer long Cliff Path which runs from the New Harbor to Grotto Beach, close encounters is not always possible. Boat-based whale watching puts these enigmatic ocean dwellers within touching distance and into anyone’s viewfinder from July to December. This industry is strictly regulated to protect the whales from excessive disturbance.
A limited number of boats conduct these two-three hour trips, each offering a substantially different package. All boats are absolutely fantastic and regularly surveyed craft with on-board toilets.
The Old harbor Museum
The Old Harbor was build in 1958 and was proclaimed a museum in 1972. The museum consist of two sections: The Historical Old Fishing Harbor and Fishermen’s Village. Some of the items used in the fishing industry in the early part of the twentieth century, plus the “Selkirk collection”, can be find among the indoor displays of the museum. Selkirk was a world famous angler and shark catcher who lived in Hermanus. The indoor part of the museum also houses exhibitions on natural history with whales as the most prominent feature. A variety of fish and other life forms which can be found locally in the intertidal zone, is on display in a number of seawater aquariums. A major section of the displays is on whales depicting especially the Southern Right Whales that visit our bay annually from May to December.
The museum also includes an open-air museum which is open 24 hours a day with boats, the old sea wall, brine tanks and “bokkom” stands.
Hermanus Hiking Trails
Hermanus has an abundance of excellent well maintained hiking trails which run through the many nature reserves that surround the town. The famous 10 kilometer, Long Cliff Path runs from Grotto Beach to the New Harbor and provides its visitors with some of the best land-based whale watching in South Africa. This trail passes by, several land marks with intriguing names and stories along its route, such as Fick’s Pool, The Hidden Spring, discovered by Hermanus Pieters, after whom the town was named or Bientangs Cave, named for the last survivor of the “strandlopers” who lived in the area.
Within the nearby Fernkloof Nature Reserve there are approximately 50 kilometer of well maintained trails through the Fynbos that covers the hills and mountains that encircle the town. This trails give visitors the opportunity to view the 1500 different floral species that have been identified in this reserve and it offers one of the most dense and diverse examples of Fynbos unique to the Western Cape.
With its scenic beauty, modern infrastructure, up market shops and endless adventure options, it’s no wonder that Hermanus has grown in size and popularity during the last decade.
